Our Team of Experts Radiologists

Our FTC radiologists specialize in obstetrical sonography and MRI. They will perform a complete ultrasound and possibly an echocardiogram and MRI which provides information on the specific details of your baby's birth defect. The radiologist also provides ultrasound guidance during the actual surgery. After fetal surgery, the radiologists will perform further ultrasound and echocardiography studies to monitor your baby's well-being.

Ultrasonography and echocardiography services are provided by the Dept of Radiology.

Roy A. Filly, MD

Dr. Roy A. Filly, MD is Emeritus Professor of Radiology, of Surgery, and of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at UCSF where he served as Chief of the Section of Diagnostic Sonography for nearly 29 years before stepping down in 2004. He is Cofounder of the UCSF Fetal Treatment Program.

Dr. Filly received his MD degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine, summa cum laude. Upon completion of his medical training he received the highest score on the Ohio State Medical Board Examination. He received the Alumni Achievement Award from the Ohio State University in 1980, only 10 years after his graduation. He completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Stanford University where he served as Chief Resident, and received the Robert Reid Newell Award as outstanding resident. Dr. Filly has won numerous other awards, including the prestigious Joseph H. Holmes Clinical Pioneer Award and the Fry Memorial Award of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (the highest award for a North American Ultrasonologist).

Dr. Filly is an honorary member of numerous national and international societies, and is a Past President of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound. Dr. Filly holds fellowships in the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. Dr. Filly has published more than 450 scientific manuscripts, and is co-author of two textbooks, and an interactive teaching CD-ROM.

Dr. Filly has received many teaching awards including Teacher of the Year Award in the Department of Radiology (1978), the Chief Residents Teaching Award in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine (1981), a Special Commendation for Excellence in Teaching from the Chief Residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology Award (1982), and a Special Commendation for Teaching from the Residents in Diagnostic Radiology (1982). Dr. Filly has appeared regularly in the publication Best Doctors in America since it was originally published.

Peter Callen, MD

Dr. Peter Callen specializes in diagnostic ultrasound. His interest is in fetal abnormality detection, and he works closely with the Fetal Treatment Center at the UCSF Children's Hospital. He is the author and editor of the most widely used textbook in diagnostic obstetric sonography "Ultrasonography in Obstetrics and Gynecology," now in its fourth edition.

Dr. Callen completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois. He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, where he also completed his residency in radiology and is a professor of radiology, obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences. He is board certified in diagnostic radiology.

Fergus Coakley, MD

Chief of abdominal Imaging Section Radiology

Dr. Fergus Coakley is chief of the abdominal imaging section of the UCSF Medical Center's radiology department. His interests include the evaluation of prostate cancer by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI), assessment of fetal anomalies by MRI, advanced hepatobiliary imaging, and computed tomography (CT) characterization of renal masses.

Dr. Coakley earned his medical degree from the National University of Ireland. He completed a medical residency in Dublin, Ireland, a radiology residency in Leicester, England, and a fellowship in body imaging at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has received numerous awards for his accomplishments in radiology and is board certified in radiology by the American Board of Radiology and the Royal College of Radiologists in London. He also is board certified in medicine by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Vickie A. Feldstein, MD

Interests: Sonographic assessment of fetal structural malformations

Dr. Feldstein's research activities involve applications of diagnostic ultrasound and Doppler flow analysis in the evaluation of obstetric and gynecologic pathology. Dr. Feldstein has a special interest in the sonographic assessment of fetal structural malformations. She is currently investigating the sonographic features on prenatal evaluation of fetuses with a variety of congenital anomalies which are predictive of postnatal outcome.

Current projects include assessing the ability of Doppler sonography to delineate the presence of intertwin vascular anastomoses in monochorionic twin gestations and correlate these observations with postpartum placental perfusion injection studies. Dr. Feldstein is also determining if the ultrasound demonstration of such anastomoses can be used to predict the development of complications of monochorionic twinning, such as twin-twin transfusion syndrome, and can be used to guide obstetrical management options. She is also evaluating obstetrical ultrasound of fetuses diagnosed with sacrococcygeal teratoma and determining the prognostic features on ultrasound predictive of the development of fetal hydrops and the need for in-utero intervention.
